Common Weaving Yarn Types and Characteristics

(1.) Natural fiber yarn
Cotton yarn: Made from cotton, it has natural moisture absorption and breathability, soft feel, good dyeing performance, and affordable price. It is a common choice Polyamide Yarn For Knitting daily clothes and household items. However, its elasticity is poor, its strength will decrease when wet, and it is easy to deform after long-term use.

Wool yarn: Mainly made of wool, it has excellent warmth retention, feels fluffy and soft, has good elasticity and resilience, and the woven finished product has a good three-dimensional sense. However, wool yarn is easy to shrink and pill, and some people may be allergic to wool.

Silk yarn: It is obtained by spinning silk from silk cocoons. It has a soft luster, a delicate and smooth feel, and good drape. It is suitable for making high-end clothing and decorations. However, silk yarn has relatively low strength, poor wear resistance, and is relatively expensive.

(2.) Chemical fiber yarn
Acrylic yarn: Commonly known as "artificial wool", it has good warmth retention and fluffy properties, soft feel, affordable price, not easy to shrink and deform, and bright and long-lasting colors. However, acrylic thread has poor moisture absorption, is prone to static electricity, and still has a gap in feel compared to natural wool.

Nylon thread: Excellent wear resistance, high strength, good elasticity, the woven products made are strong and durable, suitable for making outdoor products, sports equipment, etc. However, its moisture absorption and breathability are poor, and the feel is not soft enough.

Polyester thread: High strength, good elasticity, excellent wrinkle resistance and shape retention, not easy to shrink and deform, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, high color fastness. However, polyester thread has poor moisture absorption, poor wearing comfort, and easy to absorb dust.

(3.) Blended yarns
Blended yarns are made by mixing two or more fibers in a certain proportion, combining the advantages of multiple fibers. For example, cotton-polyester blended yarns have the moisture absorption of cotton and the wrinkle resistance of polyester; wool-acrylic blended yarns combine the warmth of wool and the fluffiness and durability of acrylic, improving the performance deficiencies of a single fiber while expanding its application range.

Experimental comparison of different yarn performances
In order to more intuitively compare the performance of different yarns, cotton yarn, wool yarn, silk yarn, acrylic yarn, nylon yarn, polyester yarn and cotton-polyester blended yarn were selected for the following performance tests. The results are as follows:

Test items \ Yarn type Cotton thread Wool yarn Silk thread Acrylic thread Nylon thread Polyester thread
Breaking strength (cN/dtex) 2.5 - 4.0 1.5 - 2.5 2.0 - 3.5 2.2 - 4.4 4.4 - 8.8 4.0 - 7.0
Breaking elongation (%) July 10 25 - 35 15 - 30 25 - 46 20 - 40 30 - 45
Moisture absorption (%, standard atmospheric conditions) July 8 15 - 17 August 11 1.2 - 2.0 3.5 - 5.0 0.4 - 0.5
Abrasion resistance (pilling level after 1000 frictions, 1 - 5, 5 is the best) 3 2 1 3 4 4
Hand feeling score (1 - 10 points) 7 8 9 6 5 4

Experimental data show that nylon and polyester threads have outstanding performance in breaking strength and are suitable for weaving applications that require high strength; wool and acrylic threads have high elongation at break, giving woven products good elasticity; wool threads have the best moisture absorption rate and are comfortable to wear; nylon and polyester threads have excellent wear resistance; silk threads have the most outstanding feel, but poor wear resistance. Blended yarns achieve a balance in multiple properties.

Yarn selection for different knitting scenarios
(1.) Clothing knitting
If you are knitting close-fitting clothing and want softness, skin-friendliness and breathability, cotton, wool and silk are good choices. Cotton is suitable for summer clothing; wool is suitable for winter warm clothing; silk can be used to make high-end underwear or summer light clothing. For sportswear, nylon or polyester is more popular because of its high strength, elasticity and wear resistance; blended yarn can meet a variety of needs and is suitable for daily casual clothing knitting.

(2.) Home decoration knitting
When knitting home decorations, such as blankets and pillows, you can choose yarn according to function and style. If you want a warm and fluffy feeling, wool or acrylic is suitable; if you want simplicity and durability, cotton or polyester is more appropriate; if you focus on decorativeness and texture, silk can enhance the overall style.

(3.) Special purpose weaving
For outdoor products, bags and other woven products that require wear resistance and durability, nylon and polyester threads are the first choice; when used for weaving baby products, safety and comfort should be given priority, and cotton threads or specially treated organic yarns are more suitable.

Development trend of the braided yarn industry
As consumers' demand for the quality and personalization of braided products increases, the braided yarn industry is developing in a diversified direction. On the one hand, natural and environmentally friendly yarns are gaining more and more attention, such as organic cotton yarns and recycled wool yarns; on the other hand, functional yarns have become a hot spot in research and development, and yarns with antibacterial, flame retardant, and UV protection functions will meet the needs of more special scenarios. In addition, intelligent production technology will also be gradually applied to yarn manufacturing to improve production efficiency and product quality stability, and promote the continuous innovation and development of the braided yarn industry.
